The Chicago Neighborhood Bus Tour 芝加哥鄰近地區巴士之旅 by Bin Bin Lee

Led by Doc Fuder and inspired by Pray Chicago, the Chicago Neighborhood Bus Tour’s purpose was to educate participants about God’s work through the local church and the history of Chicago’s segregation.

The event name on Facebook was slightly misleading. Instead of a bus, we rode in three vans. And it was sobering in all the ways the typical sightseeing tour is not, which should have been expected since this tour was about other people's lives.

That day, we prayed in front of America’s largest juvenile detention center, where children as young as ten are marked as “Property of Cook County.”1
We crossed blocks of Chicago painfully bereft of the Church’s presence, but we also saw other areas where storefront churches, which lack gyms and gift shops, are the norm.2

We stopped at a yard with 569 crosses, one for each murder victim this year.

We heard stories of decades of service amidst exodus from other organizations.4

And it was raining. The rain made everything more dramatic. It was the kind of day that could change your life--if you let it.

Moving on from the tour is easy. After all, it was only a few hours; it’s not my life. It’s easy to send off another prayer and then wash my hands. It’s easy to claim that I am the part of the body of Christ that ministers to middle class, not the lower class. It’s easy to fall back on how busy I am.

But I am not called to lead an easy life. I am called to obey.

Dear Heavenly Father,

If I called to give money, help me give sacrificially and cheerfully.

If I am called to give time, help me serve humbly.

If I am called for a later season, help me prepare until then.

Your name be proclaimed. The world be put to rights.

In Jesus’s name, I pray.

Amen
